Twilight–Everyone’s Reading It. Should you?

“Twilight,” is one little word I can’t seem to escape these days. I’m sure you’ve heard of the four book series written about a teenage girl and her vampire boyfriend. Many of you have even written on this blog that you’ve read the series or seen the movie. And you’re certainly not alone. To date there are over 17 million copies of these books in print. The movie based on the series opened last month and garnered over $70 million dollars opening weekend. The announcement of a second movie seemed to be the most exciting entertainment news in weeks. There are hundreds of fan sites, and opening parties, and loads fan gear available in every mall. All of this amounts to a little more than your average best-selling novel. These books have created a cultural phenomenon. But, just because everyone’s reading (and watching) this, should you? Is Twilight something that Christians should avoid altogether?

You bet!

I’ve been hesitant to take a hard stand on these books, because, frankly, I wasn’t sure you would listen. I’ve tried to address this issue repeatedly with the young women in my church. At best they’ve been uninterested on my two cents about the series. At worst, they’ve been downright combative.

And, I understand that sometimes there is an element of rebellion to these types of things. I get that if the adults around you are telling you not to read or watch something, you’re going to be tempted to at least take a peak.

But, I can’t be silent about Twilight any longer. I am deeply concerned by the potential impact of these books. And as young women interested in avoiding lies and believing God’s Truth, I strongly encourage you to buck the culture on this one. Over the next few days, I am going give you three good arguments grounded in God’s Truth for agreeing with me on this one. We’ll tackle a reason each day. And since I think it is important that you hear more than one voice on this issue, I will also be sharing some interviews with others about the topic. You’ll hear from one college-aged girl who has read all of the books and seen the movie. I think her reactions will surprise you. I am hoping that Dannah will even stop by to weigh on this hot topic.

Until then, I’d love to get your initial thoughts. Here are some questions to get you started:

  1. Have you read the Twilight series or seen the movie?
  2. Can you make any arguments, backed up with Scripture for why these books are a wise or un-wise media choice?
  3. Why do you think these books are so popular among young women?
