The December Love Challenge

Hey, friends! Beecher’s here today to issue a special challenge to us for the upcoming Christmas season—and I’m thrilled that God placed this idea on Beecher’s heart, because this same desire for reaching lonely, hurting people during the holidays has been on my heart, too! My prayer for us today is that God would give us eyes to see hurting hearts and that He would fill us with His compassion to move toward those people in Jesus’ love. Take it away, Beecher! —Samantha, Blog Manager

December is right around the corner, and Christmas always seems to be a season filled with hustle and bustle—caroling parties, dinners with friends and family, and shopping trips for last-minute gifts. And we can’t forget the ugly sweater parties! It’s a season for warmed hearts and love and kindness.

But not for everyone.

For many people, the holidays can actually be the loneliest and saddest time of the year. For someone who’s lost a loved one, seeing others celebrating with family can be a painful reminder of what they’re missing. Or someone may be longing for another person to love, and the gaping holes seem wider and wider every year. (Shoutout to all the singles out there! We’re in this together.)

In the Gospel of John, Jesus told His disciples, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). So in this season of celebrating with family and friends, I’m issuing a challenge for all of us. I’m calling it the December Love Challenge.

Let’s Show the Love!

Let’s open our eyes to see someone who may be grieving this time of year and make it our goal to show Christ’s love to them!

Here’s how it works.

Scroll through your contacts in your phone or your social media lists. Who’s someone you haven’t talked to in awhile? Found them? Perfect. Text them. Or email them. Or call them. Or write a handwritten letter. (Or all of the above.)

Send them a verse or encouraging quote and ask if they have any prayer requests. You have no idea the power that a small, simple act like that holds.

Now set a reminder or write it on your calendar to do that for one person every week in December. Why not set reminders to pray for those people, too?

Let’s imagine that 5,000 readers did this one small act of kindness. Together, over four weeks in December, we would encourage 20,000 people. TWENTY THOUSAND! Imagine how much love and encouragement would be flowing—it would be like a fire hydrant! You never know how God could use you to change someone’s life with this simple action.

Love came to earth approximately 2,018 years ago in the form of a baby boy lying in a manger. (You can read the story in Luke 2.) Now we have the opportunity to reflect His amazing love to anybody and everybody around us.

Are you ready? Let’s launch this Love Challenge!
