Taking Back Ground the Enemy Has Stolen

Several weeks ago I sat down with my journal and a pen with the goal to reflect on 2013. Looking back, I could see several areas where the Lord championed great victories in my life over the year. But since the Bible tells us that we are at war, there was also some evidence of battles lost.

In my journal I wrote these words …

“2013 is a year where the enemy has made great gains in the areas of …”

Next came a list of all of the areas in my life where I feel like the enemy gained ground in my heart and life in the past year. (If you’re not sure who the enemy is, here’s a great post on him.)

My temper made the list. So did my peace (or lack thereof). There were practical things on the list, too, like the way I spend my mornings, resulting in missing out on time in the Word more often than not.

Under the list I wrote, “I pray that before this year ends … that You would reclaim victory in every single area.”

It was a bold prayer, and honestly I’m not sure that I believed that God would answer it. But guess what? He did! Today, just two days into the New Year, I can look at that list and see that God has moved in every single area.

I was reminded once again that while keeping my heart in tune with God, and making choices that most glorify Him can be a constant struggle, God is a capable general.

Ephesians 6:11 makes this promise: “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

When I armor up with the weapons God readily provides, I will be able to counteract the devil’s tactics.

James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

If I am conscious of the ways the enemy seeks to gain ground in my life and resist, he will run away in defeat.

I don’t know what 2014 holds, but I know there will be spiritual skirmishes. The enemy will seek to distract, discourage, and dissuade me from God’s purposes for my life, but God is able to reclaim any ground that the enemy sets his sights on. He is able to have the victory in your year, too!

So grab your journal (or any old piece of paper will do). Spend a minute praying for God to show you any areas where the enemy gained ground in your life last year.

Write down this prompt:

“2013 is a year where the enemy has made great gains in the areas of …”

Then list whatever comes to mind.

Then repeat the prayer that I recorded in my journal. (This is the most important part!)

“I pray that You would reclaim victory in every single area.”

I’d love to hear about what made your list and pray with you for God’s total victory in the year ahead.
